Introduction

The Quality Evaluation Laboratory of Spices Board was established in 1989. It provides analytical services to the Indian spice industry, monitors the quality of spices produced and processed in the country and analyse all the samples collected by the Board under the Compulsory inspection on Chillies, Chillies products and Turmeric powder exported from India. The Laboratory established its first Regional Quality Evaluation Laboratory at Mumbai during June 2008. The second Regional Quality Evaluation Laboratory is established at Guntur, Andhra Pradesh during 2010. The third Regional Quality Evaluation Laboratory is established at Gummidipoondi, Chennai in 2011 and fourth in Narela,New Delhi in 2012 and the fifth one at Tuticorin in 2013.

The Laboratory at Kochi is certified by British Standards Institution, U.K. for the ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System since 1997, ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System since 1999 and Accredited under the National Accreditation Board for Testing & Calibration Laboratories (NABL) (under the ISO/IEC: 17025:2005) in 2004. The Laboratory activities are fully computerized and linked with network since 1999. The Laboratory is also in the process of providing the web enabled result delivery in the immediate future. The Laboratory is divided into three divisions Viz. Chemistry Lab, Residue Lab and Microbiology Lab for the speedy and efficient handling of the analysis done on various parameters.

The Regional Laboratory at Mumbai is also accredited under NABL ( ISO/ IEC: 17025:2005) in 2011 and the Guntur Laboratory got the accreditation in 2013. The Chennai, Tuticorin and the New Delhi Laboratory are also in the process of getting Accreditation under ISO/IEC: 17025:2005.

QEL Mumbai

The Regional Quality Evaluation Laboratory (QEL), Mumbai was established during June 2008 and received NABL accreditation during the year 2012. Later laboratory was shifted to its new facility where, Spices Board has set up a state-of-the-art the first-ever pre-engineered structure designed and built to perfection by a government organization. This structural steel building has greater earthquake resistance and being a pre-engineered building, minimal water was consumed for construction in this drought year. The building inaugurated in May 2016 is the eighth such facility established by the Board in India. The detailed drawings of the building were prepared and the entire building was built in the factory and assembled at site. The project was completed within one year, including interior works and services.

The laboratory is equipped with latest immuno, molecular, biochemical and spectroscopic instrumental techniques for the detection and enumeration of micro-organisms in food. QEL Mumbai has elevated the services to meet the global standards in analysis of spices. Tests are carried out with an objective that spices exported from India conform to specification laid down by appropriate national / international organizations or to the food regulations of the importing countries. Testing is done as per standard or validated methods to meet the requirements of the customer. The laboratory complies with the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and was accredited since 2012. The laboratory is also open to provide training for improving technical skills for exporters and traders from Spices sector.

The Quality Evaluation Laboratory of Spices Board ,Guntur was established in 2010. It provides analytical services to the Indian spice industry, monitors the quality of spices produced and processed in the country and analyse all the samples collected by the Board in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana under the Mandatory inspection & testing of Chillies, Chillies products, Turmeric powder and Cumin exported from India. Laboratory analyses all the spice samples and its products from customers. It is accredited under NABL since 2013.

QEL Narela

The Regional Quality Evaluation Laboratory (QEL), Narela was established during 2012 and received NABL accreditation during the year 2016.
